{"id":112,"date":"2022-01-22T15:34:32","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T06:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=112"},"modified":"2022-01-28T11:05:55","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T02:05:55","slug":"a-document-box-in-nashiji-lacquer-featuring-a-scene-of-mount-horai-and-a-peony-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=112","title":{"rendered":"A document box in nashiji lacquer, featuring a scene of Mount H\u014drai and a peony design"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mid- to Late-Edo Period(18 \u2013 19 C)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gift from the Homma family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This box features a sprinkled gold maki-e design on <em>nashiji<\/em> lacquer, to represent H\u014drai (Penglai), a crane, a tortoise and the Tsugaru peony; the family crest of the Tsugaru family of the Hirosaki clan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Penglai is a mountain (or island) where the Chinese concept of Shenxian thought (an ancient Chinese folk belief centering on the existence of \u2018mountain wizards\u2019 or gods) is taught. Like the crane and the turtle, it is often included in paintings as an auspicious motif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequently used to decorate larger surfaces, nashiji\u2013\u2013literally \u2018pear-skin ground\u2019\u00ad\u00ad\u2013\u2013typically refers to the technique of scattering <em>nashiji-<\/em>ko, large, irregularly-shaped flakes of gold, over many layers of translucent orange-tinted lacquer.
