{"id":1299,"date":"2023-03-07T14:13:58","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T05:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=1299"},"modified":"2023-03-07T14:42:02","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T05:42:02","slug":"specially-commissioned-doll-shizuka-gozen-and-tadanobu-the-fox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=1299","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Shizuka Gozen and Tadanobu the Fox<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Specially commissioned doll<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edo period (1603\u20131868)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donated by Sait\u014d Sh\u014dji<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These dolls represents Genkur\u014d, a young fox disguised as Sat\u014d Tadanobu, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune; and the Lady Shizuka in the kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbonzakura (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally written in 1747 for the j\u014druri puppet theater by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Sh\u014draku and Namiki Senry\u016b I, it was adapted to kabuki the following year. In this part of the story, Lady Shizuka beats the Hatsune Drum \u2014 owned by Yoshitsune \u2014 to summon Tadanobu, who she unveils as a fox in disguise. It is revealed that the drum was made from the skins of Genkur\u014d\u2019s parents, and for centuries, the fox has sought out the drum to fulfil his duties towards his parents.
