{"id":170,"date":"2022-02-08T03:00:58","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T18:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=170"},"modified":"2022-02-08T03:00:58","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T18:00:58","slug":"long-sword-with-the-inscription-gassan-saku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=170","title":{"rendered":"Long sword, with the inscription \u2018Gassan saku\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;[Designated Cultural Property of Sakata City]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Period: Early Muromachi period (15C)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gassan refers to a school of swordsmiths who were active from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) to the Muromachi period (1333-1573), based at the foot of Mount Gassan, the highest of the three holy mountains of Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata prefecture. This sword has a distinctive \u2018jihada,\u2019 the forging structure, or texture of the folded steel of its blade: a \u2018twilled cedar\u2019 pattern (\u2018ayasugi-hada\u2019) resembling large, regular waves. As this pattern was characteristic of the Gassan school, it was also known as \u2018Gassan-hada.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inscribed with \u2018Gassan saku\u2019 on the front of the blade, this long sword is a typical example of the Gassan school, and is thought to have been forged during the early Muromachi period.
