Sat\u014d Ch\u016bry\u014d spent his childhood in Hokkaid\u014d. He moved to T\u014dky\u014d to study painting but was so deeply moved by the new vitalist works of Auguste Rodin, Aristide Maillol and Charles Despiau, that he decided to take up sculpture. After graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts he was active in the Shinseisaku Art Society. After the war, his internment experiences inspired him to produce many works portraying \u201cthe beauty of humans\u201d in ordinary, everyday life. In 1981, he was the first Japanese to hold a solo exhibition at the Mus\u00e9e Rodin in Paris.
