Sakurai was interested in painting since her all-girls\u2019 school days. She moved to Tokyo and studied under Okada Sabur\u014dsuke and Satomi Katsuz\u014d in 1926. She was selected to exhibit at the first Association of Independent Artists\u2019 Exhibition. She was a pioneer amongst female Western-style painters, founding the Jory\u016b Painter\u2019s Association with Migishi Setsuko and others.
