{"id":2258,"date":"2023-05-25T10:50:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T01:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=2258"},"modified":"2023-06-22T16:08:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T07:08:53","slug":"sanen-kyoka-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=2258","title":{"rendered":"See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Takuan S\u014dh\u014d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1632 (Kan\u2019ei 9)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tangible Cultural Property, designated by Sakata city<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important Cultural Property<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donated by the Homma family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takuan S\u014dh\u014d (1573\u20131646) was a Zen monk of the Rinzai school, as well as the 153<sup>rd<\/sup> head of Daitokuji Temple.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takuan composed this poem in 1632, the year he was pardoned from being exiled for the Purple Robe Incident (a 1627 incident in which the shogunate directly overturned the Emperor\u2019s decree where he granted permission for monks to wear purple robes). Through the three \u2018saru\u2019 invoked in the poem \u2014 the words mizaru, iwaizaru and kikazaru, meaning \u201csee no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil\u201d \u2014 the poem expresses Takuan\u2019s frank state of mind during his exile in Kaminoyama in Dewa Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece came to the Homma family via the Sakai family, who ruled over the former Sh\u014dnai Domain.
