Founded in 828 during the Heian period (794\u20131185) by the monk Ennin as the Tendai Buddhist temple Enpukuji, it became a Rinzai Zen temple under the sponsorship of H\u014dj\u014d Tokimune, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate, during the Kamakura period (1185\u20131333). The present building is a reconstruction by the feudal lord Date Masamune in 1609, when the temple\u2019s name was changed to Zuiganji Temple.
