{"id":267,"date":"2022-02-28T23:33:49","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T14:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=267"},"modified":"2022-03-10T17:45:44","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T08:45:44","slug":"guardian-dog-box-inubako","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=267","title":{"rendered":"Guardian dog boxes (Inubako)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Genbun\/H\u014dreki era (1736\u20131764) Donated by Sait\u014d Sh\u014dji<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a pair of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 male and female inubako or \u2018dog boxes.\u2019 Also known as \u2018otogi inu,\u2019 they are said to have originated from the statues of guardian dogs found in the Kyoto Imperial Palace during the Heian period (794-1185).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Muromachi (1336-1573), it was customary for the nobility to place inubako in maternity rooms, as dogs\u2014being prolific breeders\u2014symbolize easy delivery, and have long been considered protectors of humans. When a child was born, the inubako would be placed at the child\u2019s bedside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Edo period (1603\u20131868), inubako were essential items found in typical bridal trousseaus of the samurai class.
