{"id":2833,"date":"2023-07-12T12:42:46","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T03:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=2833"},"modified":"2023-07-14T13:10:44","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T04:10:44","slug":"portrait-of-shandao-daishi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hommamuseum-en.com\/?p=2833","title":{"rendered":"Portrait of Shandao Daishi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attributed to be written in the hands of Shandao Daishi and Li Gonglin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kamakura-Muromachi periods (13<sup>th<\/sup>-15<sup>th<\/sup> centuries)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tangible Cultural Property, designated by Yamagata Prefecture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donated by the Homma family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shandao Daishi (613\u2013681) was a great exponent of Pure Land Buddhism during the Tang dynasty in China; he greatly influenced H\u014dnen (founder and reformer of the first Japanese branch of Pure Land Buddhism, the J\u014ddo sect) and Shinran (pupil of H\u014dnen and founder of the J\u014ddo Shinsh\u016b sect).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This painting is based on the legend that when Shandao Daishi held his hands together in prayer, the prayer transformed into the form of Amida (the principal Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism) and flew out to save mankind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the upper part of the image, there is accompanying text by ordained monk Donsh\u014d of the Southern Song dynasty in China, and the note of authentication by an artist of the same era, Li Gonglin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar work has also been found at Zend\u014d-ji, a temple associated with Chion-ji Temple in Kyoto, indicating that the original was widely circulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This scroll was a treasured possession of Reizei Tamechika, a master artist of the Edo period instrumental in reviving Yamato-e (a classical style of Japanese painting inspired by Tang dynasty paintings), who presented it as a gift to his Buddhist teacher, Gankai.
