Ch\u014dkai in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its lagoons dotted with numerous small islands, Kisakata\u2014like Matsushima in neighbouring Miyagi Prefecture\u2014was known primarily as a place of scenic beauty with small islands and lagoons during the Edo period, attracting many writers and artists, including famed haiku poet Matsuo Bash\u014d.
