He made his way to the capital of T\u014dky\u014d towards the beginning of the Taish\u014d era (1912-26), and there learned Western-style painting. In 1919, his work was exhibited at the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Taiheiy\u014d Art Association Exhibition, but, very ill with tuberculosis, he returned to his home prefecture of Yamagata. He continued to strive to produce art even while receiving medical treatment.
