Created in the likeness of the immortal Chinese hermit Qin Gao\u2014known as Kikko Sennin in Japan\u2014the child-doll here is carved from wood, while the carp is made from papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qin Gao was known for his skill at playing the koto (Japanese zither), and was a popular subject for paintings from the Muromachi period (1336\u20131573) onwards.
