He was the eldest son of Sat\u014d Ry\u014dji, a noted man of culture. His real name was Ryoichir\u014d. His younger brother was the former director of the Homma Museum, Sat\u014d Sabur\u014d. After graduating from Yamagata Prefectural Shinj\u014d Middle School (the current Shinj\u014d Kita High School), around 1919, he entered the Japanese painting department of the T\u014dky\u014d Fine Arts School (modern T\u014dky\u014d University of the Arts), receiving instruction from Y\u016bki Somei. He developed a relationship with Tsuruoka City native Japanese painter Kawamura Chiho, and while still continuing his activities as an artist, he was working as a fine arts teacher at Teiky\u014d Senior High School in T\u014dky\u014d.
