He was the son of \u014ctaki Gantar\u014d, from the branch family of \u014ctaki T\u014dzaemon, involved in the sake brewing industry. His real name was Yasutar\u014d, and he was also known as Mokumoku Sanjin (\u201cSilent Hermit\u201d) and Zuik\u014dsha. He liked paintings from a young age, and he first learned from \u014ctaki Mitsutsune, a follower of the artist-monk Ichihara Entan. Soon afterwards he studied under Ishikawa Haizan. In 1907, he moved to T\u014dky\u014d, where he studied with Araki Kanpo of the flower-and-bird painting genre. Encouraged to train in Japanese painting, he conducted a study of \u201cNabokugahha\u201d (south-north combined style), and became especially skilled at painting flowers and birds, people, and historical images.
