In 1910, he entered the Hakuba-kai Western Art Research Association, studying under Kuroda Seiki. In 1916, he was selected for the first time at the 10<sup>th<\/sup> the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Bunten at the time), also winning a prize at 13<sup>th<\/sup> Nika Exhibition. He was active amongst the core members of the Nika Exhibition, later forming the art group called the Ichiy\u014dkai.
