He made his name as a great ruler and spearheaded what were successful efforts to reform the feudal administration. His<br>calligraphy is an excerpt taken from a passage in the Analects of Confucious [\u541b\u5b50\u55a9\u65bc\u7fa9, \u5c0f\u4eba\u55a9\u65bc\u5229]<br>meaning: \u2018Nobles consider things in terms of righteousness; those of lower class look at how to<br>gain from things.\u2019 Y\u014dzan signs it under the pen name \u2018Fuji Harunori\u2019, with the \u2018Fuji\u2019 short for \u2018Fujiwara\u2019.
