Casually combining words and images on the same visual plane, these works with their lightly coloured washes and elegant, quick brushwork proved highly popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buson referred to these works as \u2018haikai mono no souga.\u2019 \u201cHaikai\u201d are what haiku used to be called; \u201cmono\u201d in this context means literature; and \u201csouga\u201d refers to quickly drawn brush painting.
