He trained at Z\u014dj\u014d-ji Temple in Edo (present-day T\u014dky\u014d) and Chion-in Temple in Ky\u014dto, and served as chief priest of Jakush\u014d-ji Temple in Ise\u2014which had fallen into disrepair\u2014and worked hard to help the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This painting depicts Gessen boiling tea beside a high priest, who is considered to be a man of virtuous character, as he lectures on virtues.
