He opened a private school called K\u014dd\u014dkan, where he trained many students. At the same time, he was in contact with painters such as \u014ckyo Maruyama, Rosetsu Nagasawa, Goshun, and Ganku. Kien\u2019s landscape paintings were as highly regarded as those of \u014ckyo Maruyama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This painting bears the signature \u201cKy\u014dsai Suiboku\u201d (\u7b47\u9f4b\u9154\u58a8). Normally written as \u6c34\u58a8 (lit. \u201cwater\u201d and \u201cink\u201d), <em>suiboku<\/em> refers to a Japanese-style of black-and-white watercolor painting. Here, \u6c34 (\u201csui\u201d) has been replaced with \u9154 (also read \u201csui\u201d), a kanji meaning drunkeness\u2014word play Kien used to indicate something he\u2019d painted while intoxicated.
