His talent was recognised by Setsuzan Kitajima, a pioneer of karay\u014d shod\u014d (Tang Dynasty-style calligraphy) in Japan, who taught him the calligraphy of Wen Zhengming (a leading Ming dynasty painter, calligrapher and scholar.)
