Letter from Tokugawa Hidetada, addressed to Ando Tatewaki (alternate name: Naotsugu)

24 June (Year unknown)

Donated by the Homma family

This is a letter from Tokugawa Hidetada to Andō Naotsugu (1555–1635) expressing his thanks for the gift of five sparrowhawk chicks.

Andō Naotsugu had served the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early age. In 1603, alongside other figures including Honda Masazumi, he participated in the event for the Imperial proclamation of Ieyasu as the first shōgun of the Edo bakufu. In 1610, upon orders of Ieyasu, Naotsugu was appointed as the chief retainer of Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of the Kii-Wakayama domain. Later, he devoted himself to clan administration as a chief retainer for the Kishū domain.

The Homma family acquired this letter in 1919 via local historians Isahaya Ken of Yonezawa and Shirasaki Ryōya of Sakata.
