A menuki is a decorative metal ornament on the hilt of the katana, typically tucked under the silk wrappings of the grip to conceal a nail. This menuki depicts two lions running side by side, gazing at each other.
Karashishi (Chinese lions) are considered signature designs for sword fittings by the Gotō family, blacksmiths in Kyoto who served the Ashikaga clan.
