Fuchigashira featuring an autumn scene of the moon and pampas grass

Inscription: Yasuchika

Mid- to late Edo period

Donated by Watanabe Riemon

Two matching sword fittings make up a fuchigashira: the hilt collar (fuchi) and the pommel cap at the end of the sword hilt (kashira). This one depicts a moonlit autumnal scene.

The moon is believed to signify belief in Dainichi Nyōrai (the Cosmic Buddha), rebirth, and immortality; it is often used as a design motif in sword fittings.
