Sugano Yaichi (1907–1991) was born in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. In 1937, he moved to Tokyo and studied at the Kawabata School of Painting. He studied under Yasui Sōtarō from 1939, and for a while was active in the Issuikai and Nitten Japan Fine Arts Exhibition organizations, before moving to Europe at the age of 46 to study at the Académie Grande Chaumière in Paris, France.
His return to Japan was well-received by the art community, culminating in various prizes, including the Kikka Award at the Nitten Japan Fine Arts Exhibition. Over his lifetime, he established a unique style of landscape expression, using bright colours and rounded forms to depict the magnificence of nature in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions.
