Tsubaki Sadao
1896-1957
Born in Yamagata Prefecture. Tsubaki moved to Tokyo in 1914 and left school the following year to study under Kishida Ryūsei. He became friends with Mushanokōji Saneatsu and others, members of the Shirakaba coterie. He participated in founding the Soudosha with Kishida Ryūsei and Kimura Shōhachi. He created realistic works that were strongly influenced by Kishida Ryūsei, and exhibited at the Soudosha, Tatsumigakai, Nihon Bijutsuin and Nika Exhibitions, as well as others. He became a guest member of the Shunyokai in 1922 but left in 1927. Participated in the founding of the Daichouwakai Exhibition, advocated by Mushanokōji Saneatsu and others. He exhibited at the Kokuga-kai from 1929. He pursued oriental realism in oil painting.
