Matsumoto Shunsuke
1912-1948
Born in Tokyo. During his childhood in Iwate Prefecture, he lost his hearing due to illness. He studied at the Taiheiyō Art Association and was selected for the prestigious Nika Exhibition for the first time in 1935. He participated in the founding of the formation of the Shinjin Gakai in 1943, and the Nihon Bijutsukai (Japan Art Assocation) in 1946. In 1947, he became a member of the Jiyū Bijutsu Association. He also contributed “The Living Artist” to the art magazine Mizue during the chaotic period leading up to the Pacific War. This illustrated his commitment to maintaining the independence of art. His cityscapes, a lifelong subject of his works, show sharp line drawings, intricate forms, lyricism and melancholy, which reflect the artist’s life.
