Fujizu by Takeuchi Seihō

[Designated Cultural Property of Sakata City]

ca. 1892~1899 (Meiji 25~32)

While the precise date of this work is unknown, it is thought that Takeuchi Seihō (1864–1942) created this large, six-panel painting of Mount Fuji between the ages of 17 and 37, under the artist pseudonym ‘Seihō’ (棲鳳). The bold, sweeping brush strokes depicting the mountain are full of spirit and vigour, perfectly expressing Mount Fuji’s majestic snow-capped form. One can see the influences of master ink painters Sesshū (1420–1506) and Kanō Tan’yū (1602–1674) in the composition, and more broadly that of the Kanō school, with its distinctive style featuring firm outlines and bright colours against gold leaf backdrops.
