Kyohobina Dolls

Late Edo period (19C)

Popular during the Kyoho era (1716–35), a time of economic prosperity, this style of hina doll is characterised by their large size and lavish costumes quite unlike actual clothes worn by court nobles. Here, both dolls are dressed in gorgeous gold brocade and safflower-dyed robes. The male doll is 49.8cm tall, while the female doll is 41.8cm tall. Notable here are their delicate fingers and finely carved faces, the latter resembling Noh masks.
