Zuiganji Temple has a long and storied history. Founded in 828 during the Heian period (794–1185) by the monk Ennin as the Tendai Buddhist temple Enpukuji, it became a Rinzai Zen temple under the sponsorship of Hōjō Tokimune, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate, during the Kamakura period (1185–1333). The present building is a reconstruction by the feudal lord Date Masamune in 1609, when the temple’s name was changed to Zuiganji Temple. It was designated a National Treasure in 1953.
