Palace Doll Sanbasō

Genbun era (1736–1741) Donated by Saitō Shōji

Also called ‘Shiragiku Ningyō’ (White Chrysanthemum Doll) thanks to its pale skin resembling white chrysanthemum flowers, this is solidly made for a palace doll, and has a refined expression. The doll is depicted performing Sanbasō, a dance from the Noh play ‘Okina’ that has also been adapted for kabuki (classical Japanese theater).
