Standing Dolls

Bunka era (1804–1818) Donated by Saitō Shōji

The costume of this tachibina––standing doll––is made from painted patterned cloth, one of the craft products of chōnin (‘townspeople’) culture during the Edo period (1603–1868). Wisteria flowers, which symbolize safety, have been painted onto its costume; these flowers are often seen on standing dolls.
