Donated by Shibutani Nao

Matsuda Shūzō (1900-1920) was born in Yokomachi, Fukura Village, Akumi District (modern Yokomachi, Fukura-aza, in the town of Yuza). He made his way to the capital of Tōkyō towards the beginning of the Taishō era (1912-26), and there learned Western-style painting. In 1919, his work was exhibited at the 16th Taiheiyō Art Association Exhibition, but, very ill with tuberculosis, he returned to his home prefecture of Yamagata. He continued to strive to produce art even while receiving medical treatment. In the years of the Taishō era following his passing, those who cared for him and grieved for his untimely death at the age of 20 saw to it that a large-scale exhibition of his posthumous works was put on at the Sakata Public hall.
