Saitō Chōzō (1910-1994) was born in Urushizone, Kitahirata Village, Akumi District (modern Urushizone, Sakata City). While studying at the Tōkyō Metropolitan Kogei High School, his work was selected for both the 5th Association of 1930 Exhibition and the 1st Dokuritsu Exhibition. After graduating, he studied under the likes of Satomi Katsuzō and Fukuzawa Ichirō of the Dokuritsu Bijutsu Research Center. Thereafter, most of his activities centered around the Dokuritsu Exhibition, winning many prizes. His activities also involved instructing the next generation of artists. In his early period, he created works in a surrealist style, while after the war he painted abstract landscapes.
