Costumed Dolls             Daimyō Procession

Kansei era (1789–1801) Donated by Saitō Shōji

Comprising a group of 15 people, these dolls feature child-like, smiling faces. They illustrate the procession taken by a daimyō (feudal lord) when he went out with his retinue on official business. Such processions were common during the Edo period (1603–1868) as many lords were required to regularly travel from their respective domains to the capital, and pay their respects to the shogun.
