Satō Kōhō (1902-1984) was born in Sakata town (modern-day Sakata City). He was the eldest son of Satō Ryōji, a noted man of culture. His real name was Ryoichirō. His younger brother was the former director of the Homma Museum, Satō Saburō. After graduating from Yamagata Prefectural Shinjō Middle School (the current Shinjō Kita High School), around 1919, he entered the Japanese painting department of the Tōkyō Fine Arts School (modern Tōkyō University of the Arts), receiving instruction from Yūki Somei. He developed a relationship with Tsuruoka City native Japanese painter Kawamura Chiho, and while still continuing his activities as an artist, he was working as a fine arts teacher at Teikyō Senior High School in Tōkyō. In 1982, he contributed to the pamphlet for the “Kawamura Chiho Japanese Art Exhibition” held at the Homma Museum.
