Suzuki Shintarō (1895-1989) was a western-style painting of the Showa era, born the oldest son of a raw-silk merchant in Hachioji. In 1910, he entered the Hakuba-kai Western Art Research Association, studying under Kuroda Seiki. In 1916, he was selected for the first time at the 10th the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Bunten at the time), also winning a prize at 13th Nika Exhibition. He was active amongst the core members of the Nika Exhibition, later forming the art group called the Ichiyōkai. In 1960, he won the Japan Art Academy award, and was chosen to become a member of said academy in 1968, and was named a “Person of Cultural Merit” in 1988.
