Emperor Go-Yōzei (1571-1617), the grandson of Emperor Ōgimachi, was the 107th emperor of Japan by the traditional count. He devoted himself to restoring the authority of the imperial household and the nobility following the chaos of long centuries of war. He spearheaded the revival of rituals based upon research into ancient practices, desiring to carry on the legacy of Japanese and Chinese arts and sciences. These efforts bore fruit in the coming era, serving as the basis of the prosperity of the oncoming Kan’ei Culture.
