Homma Museum of Art Collection

This is a wedding item (trousseau) said to have been prepared for the marriage of Sakai Tadayori (1705-1766), the fifth lord of the Shonai Domain, and Princess Chōhime, the adopted daughter of Maeda Tsunanori, the fifth lord of the Kaga Domain.

This five-tiered stacked box is decorated with gold and silver maki-e on a black lacquer ground with the creeping woodsorrel Sakai family crest and the Plum Blossom Maeda family crest with an arabesque of a young pine with roots.
