Rai San’yō (1780-1832) was a Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. He was the son of Rai Shunsui, a Confucian scholar of Hiroshima Domain. Famous as the author of the book Nihon Gaishi. Comprising of 22 scrolls and covers samurai history from the Genpei War to the Edo period, the book had a large influence on the Sonnō jōi political movement in Japan in the 1850s and 1860s, which sought to overthrow the Tokugawa shōgunate and restore the power of the Emperor of Japan.
