Antique Seto Inland Sea Tea Container

Muromachi period (15th Century)

Donated by the Homma Family

The creation of Seto-yaki is believed to date from the Kamakura period, when Katō Shirōzaemon Kagemasa (known as Tōshirō for short) first brought the method of creating glazed pottery to Japan from Song dynasty China.

This tea container was fired in the Seto region during the Muromachi period ( 1336-1573), and the flat, small item is known as an “Inland Sea Tea Container”.
