Satsuma-yaki Tea Container

Edo period (17th-19th centuries)

Donated by the Homma Family

The tradition of Satsuma-yaki pottery began with the kilns built in 1601 by the Korean potters brought over to Japan during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasions of the Korean peninsula (namely the second Japanese invasion of Korea in 1597). Amongst the Satsuma-yaki tea utensils, most of those that have been passed down are rice bowls and tea containers.
