Kuroraku Bowl – Copy of Tōyōbō

Sanyū

Donated by the Homma Family

This is a Kuroraku bowl made by the Kyoto potter and sixth head of the Raku family, Sanyū (1685-1739). It is said to be a copy of one of the seven types of tea bowls, “Tōyōbō”, created by the first head of the Raku family, Chōjirō.

The origin of the name “Tōyōbō” is believed to come from the bowl having been in the possession of Tōyōbō Nagamori, one of tea master Sen no Rikyū’s greatest disciples.
