This is an Akaraku earthenware baking pan made by Kyoto potter and tenth head of the Raku family, Tanyū (1795-1854). An earthenware baking pan, known as a Hōraku in Japanese, is a receptacle for the ashes used during charcoal setting for tea ceremonies, when the charcoal is placed in a hearth or a portable tea stove. It is also known as a hōroku.
