Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841) was chief retainer of the samurai of Tahara Domain in Mikawa Province (modern Aichi Prefecture). He studied art under Kaneko Kinryō and Tani Bunchō, also learning the methods of Western art. He produced many excellent pieces of art, specializing in portraits making use of expressions featuring Western-style shadows.
