City Frog (Fan Painting)

Painted by Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–95), who was known for his shasei-ga (realistic sketches of nature for study purposes), this fan depicts a small green frog on a large banana leaf. He created this painting when he was 36.

During the same year, the Heian Jinbutsu-shi (Who’s Who in Old Kyoto), a list of Kyoto scholars, calligraphers and painters, lists Ōkyo as second only to Ōnishi Suigetsu of the Kanō School in the painters’ section.
