At the same time as expanding their business, the Homma family, a wealthy merchant family in Sakata, also valued learning, devoting themselves to the promotion of education and culture in Sakata. Mitsuoka, the head of the third generation, studied haiku under Kamiya Gen Bubō of the Mino School, and left behind many haiku under the pen name Hōraisha Kizan.
