Blue-Green Landscape (Fan Painting)

Designated Cultural Property of Sakata City

By Tanomura Chokunyū

Late Edo–Meiji period (late 19th–early 20th century)

Homma Museum of Art Collection

The blue-green landscape on this folding fan was painted by Tanomura Chokunyū (1814-1907), a leading figure in Nanga, or ‘literati’ painting, of the Meiji period (1868–1912). Blue-green landscapes are a form of Chinese landscape ink wash painting, so named for the use of blue and green mineral or plant dyes as primary colours. This splendid painting depicts several people boating along a mountain stream with plum blossoms in full bloom.
