Tang Sancai censer

Tang dynasty (7th–8th century)

Donated by the Homma family

Tang Sancai is a type of tricolor (usually green, brown, and white) lead-glazed pottery that was used to decorate the tombs of royalty and aristocrats during the Tang dynasty. The white color is the natural color of the clay or a white slip, left exposed by using a wax-resist technique in which parts of the surface are sealed with wax before applying colored glaze.

This censer was passed down to the Homma family from a local historian in June 1920.
