Tenryū-ji celadon censer

Yuan to Ming dynasty (14th–15th century)

Donated by the Homma family

This censer is made of Tenryū-ji celadon, fired at the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang Province. The body is decorated with a peony pattern and there is a hole near the top near the handles, suggesting it once featured metal fittings.

Compared to the brighter Southern Song dynasty celadon wares imported to Japan in large amounts during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, Tenryū-ji celadon has a darker blue-green color.
