Qingbai ware dish with floral motif

Northern Song dynasty (11th century)

Donated by the Homma family

Qingbai ware is a type of white porcelain produced during the Song and Yuan dynasties and is defined by the pale bluish-green glaze used. Qingbai ware without any imprinted pattern appears entirely pale blue. On pieces featuring a carved or imprinted pattern, the way the glaze pools in the depressions causes these areas to appear darker blue, elegantly accenting the pattern.
